One of the biggest challenges people face when it comes to talking about their donations is the age old saying “I give because I want to help, not because I want to be seen”
Have you ever felt that way? 🙋♂️🙋🏼♀️
This is probably the #1 reason people hesitate to talk about or share the impact they’re making.
But let me offer you a different perspective….
When I go out for dinner somewhere and I really enjoy it, I will tell everyone about it and encourage them to try it because of how good it was. Naturally, a few people go try it out to see if they have the same experience.
But why do we think differently about donations, even though they bring us so much joy and create meaningful impact?
You see, when I donate to something, I’m PROUD to support that cause. And when I share it with others, they often want to support and donate too.
But if I don’t tell anyone about it, that cause doesn’t get the spotlight it deserves and your friends or followers don’t get to learn about an incredible movement that they could want to be a part of.
So the real problem is:
How DO we talk about it, without feeling like we are looking for recognition.
Here are the 3 things I found that have helped business owners and entrepreneurs share about their impact.
Don’t brag about how much you donate—brag about the work the charity is doing.
You can simply say “I’m excited to be supporting [Charity Name] because of the impact they’ve made in [sector they support] and if you are looking to make impact in this space, I highly recommend checking them out.Be consistent with your efforts to share about your impact
If you only donate once a year because your accountant tells you to, of course you will feel awkward talking about it. Start making your impact consistent and sharing about the change you are trying to bringFind ways to make impact that don’t involve finances.
If you believe so strongly in a cause that you’re willing to donate your hard-earned dollars or time, are you doing them a disservice by not sharing it so others can join you?
One of my friends said that we need to start making the non-profits the hero of our stories and that will shift our perspective to want to share more.
I truly believe that.
So let me leave you with this,
If you believe so much in a cause that you are willing to donate your hard earned dollars or time to support, are you doing them a dis-service by not sharing about it so others can join you? 🤔
I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on this, hit REPLY and let me know what your biggest struggle is when it comes to talking about your impact or if you believe what I have shared!
TLDR:
We as a society think talking about where we donate is a bad thing
Talking about the impact you can lead to others wanting to join you
There are simple ways to talk about your giving without feeling awkward.
Make the non-profit the hero of your story, not you!
→ PS: If you want to hangout with some incredible philanthropic entrepreneurs, we are hosting an incredible trip in February to go serve a family in need in Ensenada, Mexico and have ONE seat left!!
