The one-for-one model of impact was really made known by Tomβs Shoes, where Blake Mycoski started the initiative of every pair of shoes you buy, they donate a pair to someone in need.
That model really started to take off around the world with different brands, but one brand that has stood out to me from its inception has been TenTree Clothing.
Co-founder and CEO Derrick Emsley set out as a tree planter originally, but after offering larger corporations the ability to offset their carbon with their tree planting, he realized not many companies actually cared about their CSR.
So he decided to build his own clothing company and every time they sold a piece of clothing, they would planet ten trees.
They have since gone on to plant over 100,000,000+ trees worldwide!
Thats INSANE!
One of my favorite things is that they actually back up the impact they are making by showing you where the trees are that you planted.
The process looks like this:
Purchase: A customer buys a tentree product.
Tree Code: Each item comes with a unique tree code.
Registration: Customers register their tree code on tentree's Impact Wallet platform.
Tracking: Through the platform, customers can track where their trees are planted and monitor the environmental benefits, such as carbon sequestration and community impact.
This is an important piece of the impact journey for customers as they can follow along and see exactly what the impact is that they are making.
They have since gone on to support in many other sustainable areas from creating over 100 beehives in Uganda and building a clothing exchange that is helping keep clothing out of landfills.
Itβs companies like TenTree and founders like Derrick that inspire me to keep pushing the impact movement to other business owners in hopes that others will see how powerful it is.
You can check out their 2024 impact report and see how they are using their brand to make a bigger impact in the world!

TLDR:
The One for One model is a great way to make impact.
TenTree Clothing plants 10 trees for every article of clothing you buy.
They make impact trackable for their customers and provide full transparency
Making impact is not just good for the environment, its good for business!
