This week I had a chat with one of my friends who went to Kongo, Africa to spend time at an orphanage that serves homeless kids. The stories he shared were captivating and heart breaking.

If you’ve never been to a third world country and seen poverty, then I would recommend putting it on your priority list.

My friend and I talked for hours about how these experiences change you forever and make you have a different appreciation for what you have. It’s an experience that you get to take with you the rest of your life.

The stories we shared reminded me of my first experience serving in a rural area;

When I was 26, I had my first trip down to Ensenada, Mexico where we went and served a very poor village that didn’t have running water, there is no grass or greenery, the houses are mostly tarp’d off huts, and the people all live off the light meals they can afford to make a day.

It was tough to see, but even more tough because I didn’t speak Spanish. There was a language barrier, a cultural barrier, and a connection barrier.

As my first time experiencing poverty to this degree and at a young age, I was in shell shock. I cried, I felt awkward, I didn’t know what to do or say.

It look me hours to process what I was experiencing and how to beat the barriers of not being able to communicate.

Thankfully there was an incredible group of people there that helped support me to get involved and walked me through processing some of the emotions.

After a awhile, we ended up playing soccer like we were good friends, we did face painting with them, shared some water and food, and created memories that will stay with me forever… All while using made up sign language and pointing at things to explain.

Ive since gone on to do 8 trips down to Baja Mexico serving in different capacities from working with child sex trafficking, building houses, serving at orphanages, and even running some self development retreats of my own.

Check out this sizzle real from when I partnered with my friend Cole Hatter for our most recent trip to an orphanage he runs down there!

The biggest thing I hear every time I go down with people is “That experience will stay with me forever…” or “I have never felt more inspired to make more money so I can do more good”

When you get to serve people who are living in some of the hardest conditions you could imagine, it does something to you. It changes you. It opens your heart in a way you could never imagine.

A lot more than just writing a check to a charity with no attachment to it.

Thats what my friend and I talked about for hours the other day. He donates over $100,000 a year to charity, but the core of what makes him the happiest is the moments he gets to serve with his hands for people in need.

These are some of the PROUDEST memories we will pass on to our kids and the things we want to share with the world.

At the end of the day, I want my philanthropic ladder to out weigh my corporate ladder and it’s experiences like this that help me grow it faster

Heres a few photos from some of the trips I have been on, and I hope it inspires you to think bigger than just writing a check to a non-profit!

Not sure where to get involved with an experience like this? We are going down in February to help a family with their housing situation. Check out the details below!

My first ever experience in rural Mexico

Learning to break the language barrier with drawings and pictures!

My 3rd trip down creating a lot more confidence

Serving to support children that have been through child sex trafficking

TLDR:

  1. Getting out and seeing real poverty changes your vision.

  2. Learning to break language barriers is one of the best confidence boosters.

  3. Serving creates core memories that will last longer than any car you buy.

  4. You will come back hungrier than ever to grow your business after a trip like this
