How do we humanize homelessness? Let me share about a new friend I made.
A couple months ago I was introduced to an impact leader named Adina Lichtman.
She is the founder of a really amazing non-profit called “Knock Knock Give A Sock” and her story was super powerful.
After spending some time talking with the homeless one day, one of the gentlemen she was chatting with said to her “all this food people give us is amazing, but what we really need, are some socks!”
So Adina took action and went door to door in her dorm rooms knocking on each door to ask who would be willing to provide socks to the homeless!
She collected over 40 pairs of socks in just a few minutes and gave them to the homless!
After experiencing that, she made it her mission to help provide as many socks as possible to people in need 🧦 ❤️
Cool and simple idea! But that’s only part of the story.
The next question Adina asked me caught me completely off guard.
“Randy, when was the last time you talked to the recipient of an item you donated?”
She was right, most of the time I donate to the Salvation Army or the local shelters.
But I never get to meet the people who are getting the benefits of my items.
That is what drove Adinas next mission;
→ Meet Your Neighbours Dinner Party.
She brings together business owners and people living in shelters to create a one-of-a-kind experience where you get to meet the people you are donating to.
Adina has now found a perfect way to bring this into corporate settings where she partners with companies to create a sock drive and collect as many socks as they can.
Then they host a Meet Your Neighbours Dinner Party with their employees to allow them to feel the benefits of where their donations are going.
This has quickly become one of my favorite charities to promote and support, and Adina has quickly become one of my new best friends.
PS; if you didn’t know this, 93% of employees are HAPPIER with their employer and are more loyal to their company if they volunteer as a group.
So if you are looking for a really cool exercise to do with your company, I highly recommend reaching out to them!
The take-away from all this - Don’t just write a check or donate items. Get out there and meet the people you are supporting and I promise it will change your whole perspective on giving!
