About a year ago I was chatting with a friend who had done over $100million dollars in sales in his supplement company.

I started asking questions about culture and how he handled employees and retention and he told me there was two things he did that had the biggest change in culture.

The First Thing;
He started openly sharing with his employees about the donations they were making as a company. He said that once he started sharing about where they were donating, the employees found a sense of PRIDE in their work that it had a bigger purpose.

His sales staff started talking about the more deals they closed, the more kids they helped.

His leadership started using it as metric to share in team meetings with all the staff

And they started sharing stories from the non-profit with their team so that they could feel the impact.

The Second Thing;
He started asking his staff to share at their monthly team meetings about a moment of giving they did that month.

He said this made them turn on their Reticular Activation and start looking for ways they could help people.

Staff started coming in excited to share about how they donated to a charity and why it was special to them, how they volunteered somewhere or how they help an old lady do their gardening.

What do you think that made them do when they were walking around the office?
He said people would pick up trash, offer to take on extra jobs and find ways to help.

These 2 simple shifts created a culture that was attracting the right talent and setting the tone for the type of people that work there.

If you are looking to increase your team culture and decrease your turnover cost, maybe the staff isn’t looking for more pingpong tables or a beer tap.

Maybe they are looking for a team of people that want to make positive impact on the world and a leadership team that is driven by more than just profit.

Here is a quick stat I found to back up the fact that 7/10 of your employees agree with me.

TLDR:

  • Sharing about where your company donates to your staff is important

  • Help your staff seek out opportunities to give and help others

  • The more you lead by example, the more it spills into the work place

  • You will reduce turnover costs and have a stronger work culture if you give people a reason to feel good about their work.
